Got to tell you right away, that Florida Gothic was not what I expected... As a long-time gothic fan, I was expecting something like Heathcliff, or other similar novels where people live in castles and there is romance, suspense and more...NOT! So, if that is what you're looking for, don't buy this... On the other hand, Mitzi Szereto has written in a range of genres and I've always liked her writing, so I was willing to read on...Be prepared, this Gothic is from the Horror side of Gothic--and horror is what you're going to get! Starting with how the main character is...killed...Ernesto is not only a victim of a hit-and-run... a nearby alligator sees him and waddles over for an unexpected meal! Gory death...gory afterlife... You know, something like the infamous scene everybody thinks of when they say "Thanks for the ride, lady..."
I try not to enjoy revenge...but I've got to admit, this guy deserved to take it! So be prepared for a hunt like no other, as Ernesto finds hate, anger and a need for revenge keeps burning even after death...
He had plenty of time to think and, first, realized that he had died just as his daughter had...by a hit-and-run... and the one who killer her had just got out of jail... He would be the first... He knew unfairness in this world was wide and sometimes it seemed to come from God. He was willing to take it from Him... But, not from his peers, those humans who chose to act in evil, drinking and driving, without taking responsibility for what they did! Indeed, was God allowing him to stay here for exactly what he had in mind? How would he know? But he continues on his search...
He lives alone as he finds his way through the world that holds evil, his only friends the bugs and maggots that now occupy his home and even his body... But he sits remembering his beloved Esperanza. I admit that I am not a fan of this type of horror, but there is an underlying story that is intriguing even while horribly graphic... Just as the terrible horror is happening in Florida right now, and other catastrophes across the world, including Texas, we are pulled into the individual story that arises out of the world we live in. Ernesto lived after death for a length of time... and when the door knocked, he was ready...
Soooo, "thanks for the ride..." Mitzi! Your writing saved this book for me... I don't know how you do it...But, those who enjoy graphic horror, do check it out!

Florida Gothic The "Gothic" Series Book 1 edition by Mitzi Szereto Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Florida Gothic is a dark little tale, a quiet, intimate, vintage slice of horror. Even when it's at its bloodiest, it's like watching a grainy slasher flick with the sound turned down low, with just the shadows flickering about you. Having only experienced her erotic side, this was something of a change of pace for me, but Mitzi Szereto delivers.
Like the best horror stories, Florida Gothic is dark, creepy and violent, but it is also quirky and kind of smug. It is an altogether deceptive story, one that slithers along with the languid pacing of an alligator in the Florida heat, but which bites just as hard and just as fast. With its different points-of-view, it almost gleefully spoils the fate of its villains, letting us in on their moment of demise, before switching back to Ernesto and letting us anticipate what we already know is coming.
Similarly, while the initial deaths come quickly, unannounced and unexpected, Szereto draws out the fear and the dread of Ernesto's final victim. This is a story of dark, damaged people, of mortal men with human failings, and of one man for whom death is only an opportunity. For anybody who has ever dreamed of vengeance, ever wanted to use their dying breaths to repay an unforgivable cruelty, this is the perfect read. More than anything else, this is a book of consequences, a story where justice is rarely served, but where fate catches up. In fact, the final twist is one of the best scenes in the book, even if we know it is coming.
Part Poe, part Serling, and part King, Florida Gothic is a dark, powerful, entirely satisfying read.
Review first posted at Girl Who Reads. A copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review.
Ernesto Martinez was an older man of Cuban descent living in Miami, going about his business from day to day until he was killed in a hit and run accident. His spirit still lingered, leaving him to ponder the turns his life had taken, and all of the losses he suffered. Gradually, he realized that it wasn't fair, and he now had an opportunity to enact justice in a way that life had never given him.
The book starts out slow, with a lot of little details about Ernesto's life in Miami. It's almost like the literary equivalent of hazy air over hot asphalt on a summer day.
When Ernesto gets hit by the car, however, the story slides sideways into the odd gothic world of the title. He doesn't die, after all, and continues to rot. He gets his own kind of justice for his daughter's hit and run death years before, which is described in grisly detail, and his own assailant gets his comeuppance as well.
All of the characters, from the lowlife drug addicts to the retired judge, have aspects of their lives drawn out in detail. Sometimes it isn't even immediately obvious why that's important, but it adds to the atmosphere and eventually, the reader realizes why they're interconnected.
It makes for a very haunting kind of story, graphic but not quite horror either. Most horror novels involve demons or spirits and ramp up the psychological terror. This one remains morose at times as we follow Ernesto's thoughts through his past and the drive that pushes him forward in his un-life.
This is described as the start of a gothic series, and I can see how the same gloomy atmosphere can easily be found in other kinds of places besides Florida. I'm not sure how the novel would be classified, but classifies it as Gothic genre fiction, supernatural suspense and horror literature. This definitely fits the bill and leaves me a bit shaken by the imagery. It's a macabre tale told very well.
Scary, gory, but great writing!
Great book
This is one of the far too few books where the sense of Story is equaled by the use of language in such a flowing narrative you almost don't realize the plot line is proceeding, riding the wave of imagery in a treasure of a tale of justice and sorrow.
