I haven't read many fiction books in the past twenty years. I ready a FB post the other day about statistics regarding American book readers. I was jolted by my own contribution to the numbers. I decided that I must start cuddling up to books again to engage my imagination.I am so glad I picked this book to start my journey into reading again. If it had been one less engaging I may have just muddled on eyeballing Facebook, Ugggh.
For anyone that has been away from reading fiction books for a while, this one may start you back on your journey.

Right of Capture Isadora Deese 9781938349478 Books Reviews
Right of Capture is a fast-paced adventure with a knotty plot. Siblings Roan and Judge are anomalies, children born with the ability to unleash incredible destruction. After they are taken for “protection” by Dimond Industries, their lives become the stuff of dystopian nightmares. The book follows the two of them as they attempt to harness their powers and win their freedom - or exact revenge.
The novel tells its story with myriad narrators, giving the r
*New Book Review Policyeader a peek inside the mind of nearly every character encountered. Each character is fleshed out and real; their goals don’t begin and end with the plot. Hand in hand with this comes a sense of moral ambiguity. The narrators are firmly convinced of the right of their actions, in a manner we don’t usually get to see for those who are nominally the villain. Readers used to believing their narrator without question will find it interesting to pick through each perspective, and ultimately to decide themselves who to root for. The book can occasionally be overly wordy, and the number of factions is at times overwhelming, but overall a pleasurable romp through an inventive sci-fi world.
It is difficult to find books that students will want to read. I received an advance copy of Right of Capture and cannot wait to be able to put the book on my school library's shelf. I predict this will be as popular with my students as Riordan, Haddix, etc.
Right Of Capture does indeed capture! Your interest and intelligence that is. This fast-paced young adult novel puts you in the thick of the action right away. I personally love when authors dumps you right into the action and you have to work a bit to figure out where you are and what is going on. It keeps the reader on their toes and alert. It creates engagement right from the get go.
There are many aspects of this book which this novel will appeal to a wide audience. In particular, teens will find the main characters compelling. The author has created genuine voices for these two siblings. The action that keeps the steady pace for this adventure is well balanced so as not to become dizzying or overdone.
Don't be fooled into lumping this book into a category with all the other science fiction young adult books. This is a well rounded YA novel that appeals to a much wider audience. A wonderful addition to classroom and school libraries.
Right of Capture is a dazzling read for young adults, advanced and middle grade readers, and adults who enjoy thrilling sci-fi novels with complex and fully-developed realistic relationships. The story challenges the reader from the outset to piece together what it is exactly that makes Roan and Judge Gorey different and highly dangerous. Along with dry wit and daring, they have powers that enable them to wreak all kinds of havoc, and it is those qualities that make them highly valuable to some amoral men in suits. Roan and Judge’s special qualities take us on a deep dive into some chewy theoretical physics and sci-fi biology, but thankfully the narrative always treats us as smart and savvy, racing along at a thrilling pace, challenging us to keep up with the multiple perspectives and eye-popping science, but never leaving us behind.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC of the book, but I have ordered it for my kids’ school libraries and plan to gift it to some reluctant teen readers in my life who are bored by slow-moving novels where the science is dumbed down. I highly recommend it!
Right of Capture is a great thrilling Sci-Fi novel that will keep your attention already from the beginning of the book.
The story is compelling and keeps you in a mixture of feelings as the story advances fear, excitement, anxiety, doubt, curiosity, sadness and happiness as you put yourself in the world lived by Roan and Judge.
It also makes you think on the social context of social human behavior in a family, especially among Roan and Judge, as well as others who (tries to) interferes in their lives and cross their paths.
Although I'm sure readers of all ages will love it; as a scientist, artist and also an avid reader of mangas (Japanese comics) and fan of animes, Right of Capture manages to put these complex perspective altogether.
A totally and highly recommend this book.
The action begins on page one and it's rather like stepping onto an invisible roller coaster. The story is already in motion and the reader is challenged to make sense of the details of siblings Roan and Judge Gorey, their unusual powers, and the cast of adults who are trying to shape, control, and exploit their lives, as the scenery and action whips by.
The narration shifts from character to character and the story line is built from many perspectives. The main characters are each given an identifiable and consistent inner voice, and the author uses this to reveal individual characters' personality and wit, the motivations driving their actions in the book, and their reactions to the evolving action. The writing remains crisp yet richly witty throughout.
In addition to playing in the realms of physics and biology, the author taps into art history and US geography in creating the world inhabited by Roan and Judge. I enjoyed looking up various locations, art works, and bits of history to further visualize the sites of action of the book.
I would recommend this book for anyone from an advanced young reader to adult who enjoys sci-fi and YA fiction. The book is a compelling introduction to the planned series and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what happens in the next.
