Someone sent me this book when I was recovering from a double mastectomy 12 years ago, and it made me laugh. The author pokes fun at herself, her family, and other people without being insulting. I loved it; occasionally I had to stop reading because I couldn't see through my tears. I loaned the book to a friend; that became a permanent "loan." When another friend was diagnosed with breast cancer recently I remembered the basic content of this book but couldn't remember the author or title. So I googled something like "Pat from SNL" and bingo! That worked! So I bought two copies, one for my friend, and one for myself. Undoubtedly another friend will be diagnosed with cancer some day, and I will give my copy to him or her ... it's longer-lasting than flowers, and easier than a casserole. Laughter really is good medicine!

I filled out the rating thingie above because it was a required field. It should be considered "unrated" by me because I seldom feel comfortable assigning numbers to people's memoirs.

In a country possessed by the demon of efficiency, it's easy to forget that in the aftermath of tragedy, it's normal to alternate between mourning and cheer. Instead, we tend to derail both by stuffing the need to mourn; the tears denied then turn into anxiety, heavy-heartedness, or even depression, one reason Prozac is so popular in a country that will not let mourning work itself out naturally. ("Break down"; "losing it" what mechanistic metaphors for what in other cultures is so natural an opportunity to grow through initiation!)
Some books do a good job of helping us greet our mourning--Romanyshyn's THE SOUL IN GRIEF, C. S. Lewis's A GRIEF OBSERVED, etc. But they aren't so great at reacquainting us with the crazy, funny, absurd side of the tragic--and that's where this conversationally written book comes in.
In it you will meet various characters. The first is the author, whom you might already know through her Saturday Night Live persona and her various performances. You will meet her parents, who bestow upon her the fabulous unasked-for blessing of moving in for a while. You will meet Rita, who needs a wig, and Gus, who eats out a lot. And you will meet Mike, diagnosed with lymphatic cancer around the time that the author is diagnosed with a rarer kind.
Incidentally, you will also meet the Pope, the author's favorite person in all the world. Well, not the Pope himself, but one of his books, to which the author had a strong reaction when she picked it up at the bookstore. (Funny thing I picked up one of his books once and had the same reaction. There must be something about his aura of benevolence that brings that out in people.)
At a time when more and more public figures bash parents and ex-lovers in the name of "speaking my truth" ("venting my spleen" would be more accurate), the author has a nice way of writing personably about loved ones and their foibles without demonizing anyone.
To those stern folks who don't think that even death can be laughed at, I can only commend the words of Robin Williams "Joke 'em if they can't take a f---."
Saw this on stage at the Magic theater in SF. How Sweeney could make you laugh your ass off, and while you're still doing that, spring on you that her brother dies (imagine jumping on a trampoline,, and you just jump off the trampoline) and I'm in mid guffaw and then he dies. Never before have I felt guilty for laughing, but that's exactly what she wanted, and I feel like her brother would have wanted, so you could stop and pause and think about his life, but then get right on laughing again. Brilliant! Honestly, a great book to buy for anyone either going through cancer,( I have bought it for several people) or that has a family member going through it. It's life, there's not much else you can do about it, except smile.
I have Frasier on dvds and two of my favorite episodes are with Julia Sweeney who plays one of Frasier's particularly aggravating dates. I googled her and saw this memoir. So I ordered it as well as her cd, "Letting Go of God." I think that maybe I enjoy listening to Sweeney more than I enjoy reading her words. I've also ordered the book which is supposed to be about her mother so we shall see if I enjoy it more than "God Says Ha!" There were funny and sad moments in this memoir but for me it wasn't memorable. Nothing really stands out in my mind. Her parents are a little bit odd just as most parents are, but I don't even think that they were as odd as my parents were. I thought that the book got off to a very slow start. It just kind of crept along. The most memorable things were her brother's cancer and her cancer but actually she gave very few medical details. Her description of her panic attack was very real and believable. I don't think she wanted to give too many details as she didn't want to make it too heavy. I didn't feel a part enough of the story. I felt like an outsider looking in. I found that I was anxious to get to the end. I think that it could be more interesting for people who have watched Sweeney on SNL and feel more attached to her. I never saw her on SNL.

She did make it clear that her parents were caring parents and that she felt that they all surrounded her brother with love and care in his difficult days. Her parents reached out to her when she was dealing with her cancer, but she didn't feel the need for TLC.

Sweeney's writing is easy to read and her story is touching. I l iked her monologue better, but this is yet another insight into her life. She is a delight and has a way of bringing us into her life. n every page I'd have liked MORE--of her thinking, of the details of her world.

What a book! You will adore Julia Sweeney! My daughters and myself flew through this book and was sad when we finished! Julia, with her incredible way of looking at every situation, whether it be the worst on earth or happy times really makes the reader appreciate her humor and candid way of dealing with it all! She is an asset to earth, and I am glad God sent her here to help us look at life and do one of those great big "HA, HA, HA'S" too!
