This book is wonderful. My husband is a combat veteran, and it can be so hard to understand his mind and the way he thinks. It can be even more difficult to know how to be supportive. This story really shows some of the raw emotion and real things that happen when a loved one comes home from being in an active war zone, and I found myself able to relate to the main character a lot. The other plot in this book relates to her job working with a particularly challenging Hospice patient - but the stories intertwine, and it is a beautiful, beautiful journey until the very end. This may actually be one of the only books that has ever gotten me so absorbed that I actually shed a tear.

I loved this book. It was beautifully written and told both stories very well. I bought it because I wanted to know more about PTSD and I did learn a whole lot. But I also found out about the hospice side of how nurses work and how we can die in peace, also something we'd all like to do and we all do die eventually. A beautiful story, very well told and I'd recommend this book to anyone.
The Hospice work is different and goals are to go find ways to help one achieve peace and pain relief. All of us will face death. The decision about how need to be addressed before you get sick. You can choose. Educate yourself on the details. This books illustrates the mind needs to be active. The conversation can be comforting ..And how even in death you can help someone.
This book is three achingly poignant stories---a story about a Japanese pilot from WWII, a story of a hospice nurse caring for her dying patient, and the return of a combat soldier from Afghanistan. It is told with truth and clarity and much compassion. It is well worth the read. Don't miss it! I am telling all of my friends about this book!
I saw this book advertised in the Costco magazine and recommended it to my book club, even though I rarely attend my book club! I decided to download it to my IPad and then read it during a rainy weekend in Texas. I could not put it down! The insight and dry humor of hospice care was very thought provoking. The compassion and patience of the main character toward her husband with PTSD was intimate and realistic. I highly recommend this book. It will provide great discussion time. The fact that the WW II history was based on fact made it outstanding!
It deals with some of the most disturbing problems in our society today. Successfully helping soldiers to blend back into society, hospice care and Learning how to deal with the steps through a long death, forgiveness and peace.
There are three main characters, a plucky hospice nurse, her husband Michael a soldier trying to reinvent a new life after a third tour in Iraq and an damaged academic professor who had a damaging life. All three are going through black periods of life. Can they help each other or will they be selfish and refuse help. Read this book and learn some remarkable ideas plus be informed about a little known attack by Japanese on the Oregon coast during 1942.
It is rare to come upon a book that so incredibly touches your life at just the right moment that you know you will remember it forever. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, not just because I’m an RN, not just because I’m a Navy veteran, and not just because WWII is my favorite venue. It has it all. It makes you think, and then think some more. It is an absolute must read. Oh, and don’t expect to get much else done while reading, because it is absolutely unputdownable!.........Tara White
This book is a very good read. Deborah Birch struggles with her husband's PTSD as she pursues her recalcitrant hospice patient, Barclay Reed. Moreover, she struggles with her own sexual repression caused by her husband's rejection. Surprisingly, it is. Professor Read who provides her with strategies to help her husband heal. The parallel story of a Japanese pilot who managed to drop his bomb in the Oregon woods, connects the opposing events in the main characters' lives. This novel is a moderately paced page turner providing time for the reader's insights along the way.
